SKATE BLADE LACERATIONS

Skate Blade Related Injuries...
Hogan Hockey Inc. is involved in an ongoing educational process to increase awareness to the dangers of skate blade lacerations. Skate cuts are not uncommon in hockey. Hogan Hockey Inc. has developed a complete line of innovative cut-resistant hockey products to help minimize the damage caused by these types of injuries. However, as part of the educational process, we have come to the place where we feel it necessary to show the public what kind of damage these injuries cause and give explanations about the immediate (physical) and aftermath (physical & physiological) effects. In doing so, please find below a warning about the following material:

"What follows on this web page contains images and stories that some viewers and readers may find disturbing."

The photos on this page are actual photos from our customers. These photos show that skate blade lacerations do happen more often than we think and as with all hockey related injuries, they are one of the unfortunate realities of playing this game.

"Bryce Mckernan was injured in a pre-season tournament on Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2 in Stockton, California. He has endured substantial pain both post-operatively and being on crutches or standing for long periods of time. His social life was also affected as he missed school, school dances and games and couldn't drive. Going out was difficult and for several weeks, being upright too long without elavating his leg caused pain. His free time diminished with weekly visits downtown to the orthopedic surgeon and 3 weekly physiotherapy sessions for 2 months and another 2 months at 2X/wk. He was disappointed not to play hockey as a 2nd year player and potentially final year before moving on to college."

Brody was playing defence, went for a puck behind the net and another player landed on him just right so that his skate blade connected in that small space left vulnerable where his hockey shorts ended. Brody was only 7 years old when he got this skate cut and it really scared him. He had stitches and crutches for a couple of weeks and the area was tender for much longer than that. We knew that Brody needed to feel "safe" if he was going to get back on the ice again. We searched the internet for solutions and ideas and found your website. We ordered the Kevlar pants and explained to him that this would protect him from skate cuts. Brody was very tenative when he started to play again and it took a very long time for the emotional scar to fade. Brody has had countless games/practices in the 2 years since he was cut, and he has worn his Kevlar pants to EVERY one of these ice times. If we were to calculate the cost of the pants over the times he has worn them it would be pennies per wear. We will be ordering him a new pair for next season, not because they are worn out but because he has outgrown them. This product gave a 7 year old boy the courage to continue playing a game he loves and the confidence to play hard enough to make captain of his tier one team :) Thank you for providing such a great quality product!

About a month and a half ago, my son Luca was playing hockey. As he went down to make a save, two players crashed the net. With his legs bent, one of the skates cut him right under his left knee cap. The blade passed between his knee and the protector flap of his goalie pads. At the moment of his injury he wasn't wearing any additional knee protection. Therefore he suffered a cut of about 2½ inches in length, and 14 stitches to close up the cut. The doctor said he was extremely lucky nothing major was severed. He is recovered from the injury, and since then is wearing additional knee pads underneath his goalie pads.

With all the equipment goalies wear I thought my son was well protected. It took this incident for me to realise just how exposed these kids really are to injury. I wish I had known about your product before hand but I am thankful his injury was minor and I will now take extra caution to ensure he is properly protected. Although my son would not allow me to take a picture of his cut initially because he was so frightened, he did allow me to take a picture once it was stitched up which I can share with you. My son was 7 at the time. Since the incident he has worn his pants and wrist guards for every game and practice. He has had the pants for 3 years (and is just starting to outgrow them). I have washed them every week and they are still in great condition! We will definitely be ordering a new pair for next season.

Christian's catastrophic injury.

There is nothing worse than seeing your child injured and you can't do anything to help him. He has had good days and some not so good. We went through periods of him convinced he would never play again. It has taken a lot of emotional energy on our entire family to keep him positive and to get through those tough days. I'm sure you are aware, that having a positive attitude helps in the recovery process.  As he nears the 8 week mark, his therapy has included holding a stick again...I haven't seen him that happy in a long time. He'll be heading back out East in a week or so, and will be fitted with a brace to protect the arm that will fit into his glove. He will be able to skate with the team and hold a stick. He will not be able to tie his skates for some time.
